Many of your beliefs about health and fitness come from your parents, teachers at school, what you read in books or hear on TV. Unfortunately reports, books, articles and even infomercials on health and fitness are often riddled with outdated or misguided information, often generated by self-serving entities.
Joseph Pilates on the other hand, over 70 years ago, studied the anatomy of movement and recognized that the body, while ruled by the mind, has an intuitive and efficient movement system based on very simple principles.
The following ideas will assist you in changing your beliefs about wellness and will improve how you move, look and feel.
1. Be Curious About Posture
Notice how you and others sit, stand and move, paying particular attention to the relationship between the head, shoulders and hips. Think about how many of your day-to-day complaints have to do with incorrect postural alignment and remember that the Pilates reformer is your key to altering and correcting those imbalances.
2. Make Becoming Active A Priority
The health of your body depends on movement. So do something every day to increase your heart rate and improve your posture. Start with 5 minutes...anything will help. Remember, stand instead of sitting, walk instead of standing and run instead of walking.
3. Do Not Procrastinate
Every day you delay becoming involved in your own fitness is another day that you are not improving, a day lost forever. It doesn't matter how old, how unfit or how overweight you are, there is great power in the first step.
4. When Moving, Move In All Directions
Forcing your stabilizing muscles to wake up will completely alter everything about your body. It is multiple movement that requires you to use a variety of directions; angles and parts that make your postural muscles do their job so that your mobilizing muscles can move efficiently. Pilates on the reformer teaches the postural muscles to stabilize when you move because you are on a moving platform.
5. Listen To Your Body
You have an intuitive awareness and sense of your own body in space. You know what is tight, what hurts, what feels good and what is possible. Pay attention and listen. Begin slowly, learn consistently and trust what you know and feel about yourself. Knowing that you are listening, your body will respond and change without injury.
6. Do Not Let Anything Stop You
Eliminate all fears, all negative thoughts and all sabotaging mechanisms from your mind. Do not let your age, your fitness level or your lack of health stop you from believing that your body is able to heal and improve with the right care and kindness. Pilates is the safest and most profoundly enhancing fitness system that I have found. Do a little every day and watch your whole body change, not only how it feels and looks but how it moves. Feel young again, the time is NOW!
