What are Probiotics and why do you need them for Good Digestive Health ?

What are Probiotics?

Probiotics are trillions of micro-organisms that are supposed to inhabit a healthy digestive system. Unfortunately, due to poor diet and an abuse of antibiotic ingestion, we lack the essential friendly bacteria in our colon that unilaterally provide the greatest defense against many chronic health conditions.

Probiotics as opposed to "antibiotics", are tiny, friendly floras that function to absorb and digest food, increase immune function, detoxify poisons, contribute to the manufacture of essential vitamins and in essence, they play a major role in maintaining your health and well being.

"Probiotic" literally means for life.

Probiotics promote the healthy growth of beneficial bacteria that go a long way to providing a healthy gut. Obviously good health habits and diet are essential in maintaining a healthy system however it has been shown that taking a daily Probiotic ensures that your organs and tissues are protected from many diseases. In 1994 the World Health Organization stated that "probiotics are the next, most important immune defense, especially after antibiotics have been prescribed."

Friendly micro flora or probiotics were originally discovered in the gastrointestinal tracts of healthy people. In the late nineteenth century Dr. Eli Metchnikoff suggested that "death begins in the gut", won the Nobel Prize in 1908 for his research on probiotics and named the imbalance of intestinal flora, "dysbiosis."

How do Probiotics work?

Your gastro intestinal tract is amazingly sterile and clean while in the womb and it is not until an infant is exposed to the outside world, during delivery that it first comes into contact with unfriendly bacteria.

It has been shown, that breast fed babies colonize healthier strains of bacteria than bottle-fed babies, building a stronger immune system with less occurrence of colic, asthma and eczema.

Why do you need Probiotics?

Beneficial bacteria flourish everywhere throughout your body, but the most important of these are the lactobacilli and bifida bacteria, found in the colon. They enhance our health and may prevent disease. If these friendly bacteria are overwhelmed by unfriendly bacteria, they release exo-toxins which can destroy the intestinal lining causing a leaky gut which in turn poisons our blood, ultimately causing disease.

A lack of beneficial flora, caused by the overuse of antibiotics or bad diet, creates an overgrowth of unfriendly bacteria; which has been linked to an increase in allergies, heart disease, inflammation, cancer, asthma, obesity, urinary tract infections, digestive bloating and premature aging.

BENEFITS OF PROBIOTICS

It is obviously important then, to maintain a healthy level of friendly bacteria in your digestive system, in order to achieve the following benefits:

  • Maximum absorption of vitamins and essential minerals like calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and manganese
  • Stronger resistance to food poisoning by making the intestinal tract inhospitable to invading microbes.Higher levels of helpful digestive acetic and lactic acids, to prevent the overgrowth of harmful yeast and fungus, poisonous E. coli, Helicobacter Pylori and Salmonella.
  • Prevention of vaginal and urinary tract infections
  • Prevention of toxin absorption and reduction of toxic overload on the liver.
  • Inhibition of cancer causing nitrate bacteria, in the bowel
  • Better removal of toxic mercury and pesticides
  • Protection from damaging radiation and harmful pollutants
  • Lowering of blood cholesterol
  • Improvement in hormonal balance
  • Prevention of food poisoning and diarrhea
  • Protection against Inflammatory Bowel disease
