Human hair, which grows inside a hair bulb, deep inside a hair follicle, has a growth cycle that has 3 phases: growth (anagen phase), rest (categen phase) and shedding (telogen phase). The anagen phase is different in every person and lasts 3 to 5 years; the categen phase lasts  2 to 4 weeks and the telogen phase lasts between 3 and 4 months.

During telogen hair begins to grow up and out pushing the old hair out of the follicle and normally 1 in 10 hairs is in this phase at any one time. The new hair emerges from the same opening at the surface of the skin as the old one, and the hair cycle begins again.
