I wrack my brain daily to find a unique and more succinct way to explain how AeroPilates is superior to other methods of exercising.
Obviously it involves movements that employ many muscles at once instead of a single muscle group...
Obviously it prioritizes stabilization of the spine before moving the arms and legs...
Obviously it is performed primarily supine so that the body is tricked into correcting imbalances while we are vertical...
Obviously it cleverly strengthens opposing muscles by teaching movements that employ both groups...
Obviously it balances out weakness and tightness with strength and flexibility...
Obviously it actively elongates muscle fibers to increase range of motion of the joints...
Not so obviously it teaches you to stabilize then mobilize while moving through space...
Even Mat Pilates, touted for its core strengthening, cannot do that!
The importance of training in this manner is not to be overlooked. We need our muscles to be balanced, strong and flexible and we need our spine to be stable and correctly curved as we move through life. To increase Kinesthetic Awareness while getting all the other wonderful benefits of this fitness miracle is what makes AeroPilates profoundly brilliant.
I am thrilled that you have made the decision to include this life changing method of movement into your life. Watch your body hum, your mind relax and your spirit soar and if you have the urge to share it with your friends, do so knowing that you are giving them the gift of renewed vitality with minimum effort. Keep up the great work and feel free to email me with questions that might make your Pilates experience better or share your love of AeroPilates with others via our message board.
Since no clinical studies have ever been performed on a reformer we decided to put our AeroPilates system to the test.
The goal of the study was to thoroughly examine AeroPilates, an exercise program that combines Pilates Strength Training with supine Cardio Rebounding; which can be accomplished by a majority of people, and to determine whether there are significant fitness and weight loss effects.
Pilates is renowned for its unique multiple plane movements and is well touted for the wide array of benefits it provides including Improved Strength, Mobility, Endurance, Flexibility, Core Stability, Proprioception, Control and Coordination as well as Mind/ Body Stress reduction. It has long been used for rehabilitation and is typically performed on a reformer or on a mat on the floor.
I have prepared a short summary of our findings but if you care to read an in depth discussion of the study performed by Neil Wolkodoff, PhD, Sue Peterson and Jeff Miller, PhD.
