Is Loneliness Contageous

Posted by Marjolein Brugman on Friday, July 23, 2010

FACT or FICTION: Loneliness is contageous.

The answer is FACT: 2009 study in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology says that "Feelings of loneliness are not only linked to higher rates of illness but researchers say that loneliness occurs in clusters: Lonely people attract other lonely people. Lonely people may act in a less trusting manner making people less likely to bond with them. If you feel lonely, seek support from family, friends and your community."

Loneliness tips:

  • Talk to your neighbor
  • Invite someone over
  • Make a phone call
  • Give a gift
